Websites and Final Reflection

Websites and Final Reflection Creating a website is a daunting task to many because of all the information and time it requires to build one; however, it isn’t as bad to create when you know some tips. The first tip to creating a website is to learn from the mistakes of others who created websites . Instead of learning mistakes through hard knocks for yourself, you can avoid some crucial mistakes at the expense of others. The main mistakes to avoid are inappropriately designing your website and making your website hard to navigate. The design of the website is probably the most critical mistake people make as they don’t properly think through and imagine beforehand what they want. Instead, people haphazardly create designs which make no sense and put things together which are unfitting. To remedy this issue, search online a theme you wish to use and stick with it. Consulting outside resources will be your friend in designing your perfect website. Moreover, it’s imperative once you...

Interview Tips and Light, Bright, & Polite

Interview Tips and Light, Bright, & Polite  It’s important to know tips and tricks when going into an interview. Interviews are the main way many employers hire their employees and it is their first impression of them of who you are so. Last week, I attended a call with several professionals from different backgrounds discussing jobs and interviews. Jennifer Lee who works at Microsoft recommends using LinkedIn and updating it every 6 months. LinkedIn is a professional website where employers can see the backgrounds of employees. Employees just have to list their information online for the employers to view. This website is key for employers to be interested in hiring workers. Another person on the call added to always include the solution during an interview. You do not want to answer a question that you do not know the answer to without providing a solution. For example, it is always best to express interest in the question the employer asks and tell the interviewer tha...

Augmented Reality and the impact it will have on the future

Augmented Reality and the impact it will have on the future “The future is now” says Tim Cook, Apple CEO. “I think that one day we will wonder how we ever lived without it,” Cook says of augmented reality. “We can have a much more enhanced conversation with the power of AR.”  AR or augmented reality is a new technology that is being developed by tech companies and people across the world. The new technology allows for real time interaction with objects or scenes that are viewed through a technological lens. For example, airports are harnessing the power of AR to create "smart glasses" which give airport ground staff enhanced abilities to organize packages and identify where they go. This technology allows "a ground handler loading cargo onto a plane [to] now "see" and scan a virtual QR code displayed on cargo or baggage containers, and through the glasses instantly view the details of its weight, loading sequence and allocated position within the aircraft....

Presentation Tips and more on Light, Bright, & Polite

Presentation Tips and more on Light, Bright, & Polite  It is very important to know how to create slideshow presentations if you are a student or a business professional. The goal of this week's blog is to share how there are other alternatives to the regular Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint that you can use to enhance your digital profile.  The first alternative to Google Slides and PowerPoint is  Haiku deck . Haiku deck allows users to create professional looking slides with minimal words. This slideshow software allows you to create slides where you want to emphasize pictures over words. For example, in the picture below you can see how the picture is the main focus of the presentation, This is particularly useful if you want to present a slideshow to an audience where it's more proper to explain things or if you don't have much data to share. I think this is useful for me if I want to easily share to a family member or group how something works or what ...

The Social Dilemma and APA Formatting

The Social Dilemma and APA Formatting The goal of this week's blog is to provide commentary on the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma  and to review key rules and applications of APA formatting.      The Social Dilemma , directed by Jeff Orlowski gives insight through various interviews of tech professionals how social media works behind the scenes. This documentary reveals how AI works, how people respond to social media, and how people are addicted to social media. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and so on have artificial intelligence scripts which run in the background predicting the best ads or videos/tweets for you to view. Ultimately, the goal of these companies programming these algorithms and machine learning programs is for you to stay on their website so they can generate revenue. One excerpt in the documentary that stood out to me by one of the interviewees was that "If you are not paying for the product, you are the product." This impac...

Responding to the Naysayers & Social Media

Responding to the Naysayers & Social Media Josh Ochs’s second chapter of Light, Bright & Polite gives insight and feedback on how to respond to negative posts on social media. Ochs gives the example of how two citizens in his local town had written hate blogs about him running for mayor. Instead of arguing with the people writing negative things about him online, Ochs passed up the opportunity to argue and instead reached out to them individually. I especially learned from this chapter that arguing online makes you look bad and it hurts your reputation. I like how Ochs describes someone who argues on social media. He said, “All they’ll see is that you’re acting like someone who can’t seem to rise above an argument that’s probably not worth it and is rarely constructive”. Here, the reader can see that arguing online can reveal to a business or company searching for you online what type of person they are really hiring. They will most likely not want to hire someone who is a...
